Industrial Collaboration Schemes
The Cockcroft Institute runs a summer student programme which gives undergraduate students the opportunity to work with innovative companies to further develop the skills they have learned so far in their studies. The next round of summer students will run for 6 weeks from July 2025. More information can be found here.
Each of the Cockcroft Institute’s academic partners offer a range of PhD programmes with opportunities for industrial collaboration. Collaboration mechanisms are flexible, and include
- Advising on industrial needs
- 6-month industrial secondments
- Part funding a 3+ year project to tackle a specific business challenge
KTPs are unique collaborations between business and academia, where an associate is employed in industry but can work at the Cockcroft Institute with a goal of improving the company’s competitiveness by embedding knowledge. KTPs are funded by UKRI, with SMEs eligible for up to 67% of project costs, and large companies up to 50% of costs.
More information on KTPs can be found here.

The Cockcroft Institute is available to partner on Innovate UK grants, giving businesses with a UK base access to world-class expertise and facilities. Partnering with the Cockcroft Institute on grants can help build a stronger proposal and enables access to a wider range of talent and companies, helping deliver impact.
IAAs are unique to our university collaborators, and can be used to fund either secondments of up to 12 months or proof-of-concept projects.
- Between 50-88% of salary costs are available depending on the company size and project scope. IAAs can be used for academic staff to be seconded in industry, or company staff to be seconded at a university.
- Similar levels of funding are available for small projects to help companies access the equipment and skills required to gauge the viability of projects.
Where research does not fit with the topic or timelines of a funding scheme, Cockcroft Partners are able to undertake contract research.
