Business and Industry

Our skills in the underpinning technologies of accelerator science have broad applicability, and we partner with a range of industries in these areas.
The Cockcroft Institute delivers competitive edge for businesses engaging with particle accelerator technology. Our unrivalled particle acceleration facilities and knowledge enables your business to stay ahead of the competition, to innovate and develop new IP. Our work helps to address global challenges in health, security, manufacturing and the environment. For example, we are playing a leading role in ongoing development of the proton beam therapy facility at the Christie hospital. We are also working on improved mechanisms for cargo scanning.

Core Areas of Expertise for Industry Applications:

  • End-to-end Accelerator Expertise: From idea, through design and prototyping to system build and operation.
  • Radio Frequency systems: optimised design of state of the art RF systems and components.
  • Beam modelling and Simulation
  • Beam Diagnostics; development, construction and operation of cutting edge beam instrumentation.
  • Radiotherapy; beamline and accelerator design for a range of radiotherapy modalities.
  • Underpinning Accelerator technologies: Permanent Magnets, Cryogenics, Vacuum and Surface Science

Our Facilities include:

  • Radiation Bunkers: Two dedicated Cockcroft Institute bunkers are currently being built at STFC’s Daresbury Laboratory (available Spring 22). These bunkers will be available for use for collaborative research on new accelerator applications.
  • Linac Test Facility: can be used to investigate accelerator use in a range of applications including security scanning, radiotherapy and water treatment.
  • Versatile Electron Linear Accelerator (VELA): test facility capable of delivering high quality electron beam. Capability for development and qualification of advanced accelerator systems.
