Cockcroft Institute Particle Accelerator School

The Cockcroft Institute recently held its first accelerator school at the end of October. The school was attended by 22 students from 6 different Universities and ASTeC. The school was split into two weeks with the first week dedicated to lectures, including a talk on light sources from Gerhard Materlik, and the 2nd week dedicated to a design exercise. For the design exercise the students had to do a complete design of a 3rd generation light source. The school was closed with a talk from Ian Martin from DLS on the commissioning of diamond.
The school also had a social programme including pizza evenings, a horror movie night and a trip to Laser Quest which was won by the team from Huddersfield University.
The students and lecturers all found the school very educating. Dr Graeme Burt, head of education and training at the Cockcroft institute remarked “I was amazed at how well the students did in the design exercise, the students all seemed to learn a lot and was very impressed by the well informed questions they asked at the end of Ian Martins talk”
