‘Beam quality study for a grating-based dielectric laser-driven accelerator’, authored by CI researcher Yelong Wei et al, has been selected as one of the 20 most impactful articles by the journal Physics of Plasma in 2017. Specifically, it was one of the journal’s most downloaded articles last year.
This open source article numerically investigates the beam quality for a dielectric micro accelerator. In the simulations the beam is given the same properties as expected in the CLARA project, a UK research facility at Daresbury Laboratory. An electron bunch is fed into a specially-shaped grating-like structure with 100 miniature cut-outs called ‘periods’ to interact with a laser pulse. All important properties of the electrons after passage through the structure are then examined in detail. This gives important insight into the achievable beam quality and allows plan experiments with such type of beam.
Yelong Wei’s article shows for the first time through comprehensive simulations how an electron beam with specific characteristics can be generated in a micro accelerator structure. It provides a recipe for realising optimised micro accelerators in the future.
