STFC is about to launch a call for the next round of Ernest Rutherford Fellowships. It aims to support future scientific leaders to establish a strong, independent research programme. The fellowships last for five years and are intended for early career researchers who do not have an academic position yet.
The Cockcroft Institute has a quota of four Ernest Rutherford Fellowship applications, and hence we are launching a call for candidates to submit Expressions of Interest (EoI) to take up these quota applications.
We are asking candidates to submit a 1-page outline proposal detailing the research programme they would pursue if their fellowship application was successful and a CV. The CV can be annotated or include brief statements to provide context where necessary.
If your application has been affected by an earlier career break or other extenuating circumstances or you have worked part-time, please indicate this so that it can be taken into account in the assessment of your application.

All interested candidates must send a CV and their one-page outline of their research plan to the Director no later than 14th July 2023.
The Cockcroft Institute will operate a selection process based on the submitted documentation. The successful candidates will be notified early in August to give them sufficient time to prepare and submit the full application to STFC by their deadline (date to be announced) and will be assigned a suitable CI academic to mentor them in the drafting of the full proposal.
Selection will be based on:
Track record of impactful research outputs. All research outputs will be considered including journal articles, technical reports, conceptual design reports, patents, software, preprints, conference proceedings, white papers, etc.
- The impact of these outputs can be demonstrated through, for example: the reach of an output (indicated by citations or altmetrics), presentation of research at a conference, the merit of the research produced, prizes or awards, industrial impact, etc.
- This track record will be assessed commensurate with your sub-discipline.
Leadership. This could be demonstrated through collaborations set up, role in existing collaborations, work packages or experiments, invited talks, outreach initiatives, etc.
Originality and importance of the research proposal. STFC specify the need for a distinctive vision separate from other academics in your group.
Timeliness, and feasibility of the research plan.
