A new book written by four staff members at the Cockcroft institute has just been released last year by CRC press. The Science and Technology of Particle Accelerators provides an accessible introduction to the field, and is suitable for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and academics, as well as professionals in national laboratories and facilities, industry, and medicine, who are designing or using particle accelerators. Providing integrated coverage of accelerator science and technology, this book presents the fundamental concepts alongside detailed engineering discussions and extensive practical guidance, including many numerical examples.
The book was written as the authors felt there was a gap in the market for an introductory text that had equal coverage of beam physics, RF engineering and magnets as most books would focus on one of these from either a physics or engineering viewpoint. The Science and Technology of Particle Accelerators provides good coverage of each aspect written by an international expert in that area. The starting point for the book was the extensive lecture courses given at Cockcroft for the CI Education programme (where the lectures are freely available for use) where the authors have lectured for several years, and this book will make an excellent companion to that course.
For each topic, the authors provide a description of the physical principles, a guide to the practical application of those principles, and a discussion of how to design the components that allow the application to be realized.
