In a wide-ranging collaboration, STFC staff will be present at the exhibition as part of an exhibit entitled “Accelerators Everywhere – from the Big Bang to Curing Cancer”.

This exhibit has involved collaboration between the Cockcroft Institute, the John Adams Institute, CERN, ASTeC, Diamond and ISIS.  Our aim is to explain to the public how particle accelerators have improved their lives, and why they need to support the continued development of particle accelerators to deliver advances in fields such as medical imaging, cancer therapy and sustainable energy generation.

The “Accelerators Everywhere” exhibit is 1 of 23 selected by the Royal Society to appear in this year’s exhibition. It will offer visitors the chance to experience a 3D virtual reality tour through the ALICE and EMMA accelerators, and to interact with various electronic simulations including an LHC simulator. There will also be a model of the proposed PAMELA medical accelerator, plus many components from real particle accelerators. These experiences will be backed by a variety of media presentations and videos to further explain how particle accelerators work, and material to explain the ‘how and why’ of the experiments these machines actually support. Of course, there will be a whole host of particle accelerator physicists on-hand to talk visitors through the exhibit and answer any questions. You can learn more about the exhibit by visiting http://www.accelerators.org.uk

The exhibition is open daily to the public between 10:00 and 17:00 from June 30th until Saturday July 4th, and admission is free. Come along and support our scientists, or urge a friend to go and visit the exhibition.

NLS_TAC

The first meeting of the international Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) took place at the Cockcroft Institute on June 4-5, 2009 and concluded that: “NLS will be a fascinating and unique new radiation source” and importantly that it contains an “adequate balance of high level, state-of-the-art technology vs. ambitious novel concepts”.
