ALPHA-X Topical Workshop

Approximately 30 delegates enjoyed a wealth of enlightening presentations on contemporary topics in laser-plasma physics, FELs and related areas of interest to the ALPHA-X partnership at an open research meeting held on 2-3 May 2013 at the Cockcroft Institute. The meeting was hosted by the Lancaster Mathematical Physics Group and featured several invited talks from members of the Cockcroft Institute including speakers from ASTeC, University of Manchester and Lancaster University as well as invited talks from researchers based at University of Strathclyde. The programme included talks on CLARA and its potential in plasma acceleration experiments; progress towards using laser wakefield accelerators for radiotherapy; a status report on ALICE and the possibility of exploring dielectric wakefield acceleration on VELA; theory of electromagnetic wave scattering from an accelerating dielectric medium;  latest emittance measurements on the ALPHA-X beamline; an exploration of Raman amplification using averaged particle-in-cell techniques; recent developments in FEL codes for fast simulation of ultra-short electron bunches;  radiation production in laser-plasma wakefield accelerators and the possibility of using ultra-intense lasers to discriminate between different theories of radiation reaction.
The organizers of the meeting would like to thank the Cockcroft Institute for supporting this event.
